Suffragist, temperance advocate, and physician, Eleanor Elizabeth Burnside was born in North Brookfield, Mass., the daughter of Eleanor Larabee Newton and Elbridge Gerry Howe. She graduated from the New England Female Medical College in Boston in 1867 and practiced medicine in Detroit, Mich., where she founded the Women's Hospital and Foundling Home, and then in Buffalo, N.Y.
